We have had only two dresses from the 19th century in our long collecting career that can be clearly located to Germany. This is one of them. Dresden label: Marie Robel. It is probably the dress of an emigrant to America, where it survived the turmoil of the two world wars. It comes from the Museum of the City of New York. It is made of sea green (celadon) silk, ca. 1898. The top is made in the style of a bolero. The "bolero" is edged with lace and pearls. Pleated bust area. Long sleeves, the end of which is decorated with lace and pearls. Puffed sleeves. High stand-up collar in gold silk and pleated lace. Cummerbund in the same gold-tone silk. On the back large bows. The skirt falls in the typical shape of skirts from that period: relatively straight in front, pleated in the back and ending in a small train.

Well preserved. The silk from which the cummerbund and stand-up collar are made has become thin and should be handled with care. Discreet underarm stains. Smaller stains on the chest, larger stains on the skirt. Nevertheless: a very rare and exceptional dress from Germany. The brooch is not included.
